Vashon Island Real Estate
Vashon Island, Washington, is Puget Sound's largest island south of Admiralty Inlet. Part of unincorporated King County, it had a total population of 10,123 as of the 2000 census. At 37 square miles, it is about 60 percent larger in area than Manhattan, with about 1/150 the population.
Vashon has two ferry terminals. The southern terminus of the Vashon Highway is the Tahlequah Ferry Terminal, connected to the Point Defiance neighborhood of Tacoma by a Washington State Ferries run. The northern terminus of the Vashon Highway is the Heights Dock at Point Vashon, which services the state ferry docks at Southworth, Fauntleroy in West Seattle, and Downtown Seattle. There are no bridges to connect the island with the mainland.
The 12-mile-long Island has long been a retreat for local artists and authors. Other Vashon Island residents include horse breeders, commuting professionals, and people looking for a low-key environment to call home. Woodlands, water views, and the peace that pervades the Vashon Island community is the perfect atmosphere for creative types. Miles of lightly traveled roads invite Vashon Island real estate owners to ride their bikes or take long walks while enjoying the scenery. Historic Point Robinson lighthouse offers views of Mount Rainier and the Seattle skyline. On the west side of Vashon Island, Lisabuela Beach is the place to go for breathtaking sunsets. And KVI Beach is a popular spot to sunbathe, picnic, or walk the shoreline.
