Located just 4 miles from Olympia, Lacey became a bedroom community for Olympia and to some extent Tacoma, 19 miles to the north. The city is perceived as a slower paced community with its best characteristics being in close proximity to many lakes and forests as well as being close to the beautiful Nisqually Valley.

As of the year 2006, lacey’s population was 35,412.  Lacey now flourishes with retail, warehousing/distribution centers, a large retirement community, a major mushroom farm, and Weyerhaeuser's corrugated container facility. With a median family income of 51,000, residents of Lacey enjoy a high standard of living with fewer people below the poverty line than much of the nation.

Of the housing in Lacey, 59% is owner occupied.  Much of the housing in Lacey is newer than nearby cities due to rapid growth in recent years.
